Charles Phoenix set out on a wonderful adventure last week and NPR is following him. High up on my list of Things to Do Before I Perish is to set off on an extended road trip across America. Mr. Phoenix is not only traveling halfway across the country in a 1961 Pontiac Bonneville, but he's doing so to see the grand unveiling of a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere in Tulsa, OK that has been buried underground for fifty years. It's the conclusion of a half century-long contest, and whoever best guessed what Tulsa's population would be in 2007 will win the car. If that person has passed on, the next of kin wins this brand new vintage car.
Unfortunately, when the vault was opened up, the car was found sitting in a pool of water, so it may not be in as pristine a condition as one would hope. Still, it practically has no miles on it.
Read all about the unveiling in the Charles Travels blog.
